Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs (1974) is a landmark graphic collaboration that pairs the late-career poetry of W. H. Auden with the visual interpretations of sculptor Henry Moore.

Conceived in 1972 as an equal creative dialogue, both Yorkshiremen found common artistic ground in the rugged, industrial landscapes and deep psychological anxieties of their youth. Following Auden’s death in September 1973, Moore executed a moving series of graphic tribute drawings, including Head of Wystan Auden.

Rather than literal narrative illustrations, works like Lullaby Sleeping Head, Thin Lipped Armourer, and The Forest conjure vast psychological distances, fractured organic rocks, and human bodies emerging from thick blackness.

The imagery ranks among the most melancholic registers of Moore’s career, closely overlapping with his concurrent Stonehenge and Coalmining sequences.

The portfolio debuted alongside Moore’s historic mining drawings at a dedicated British Museum exhibition. Though there are only 5 here, complete sets and individual proof sheets are preserved internationally within major public archives, including the Tate Collection, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Henry Moore Foundation.
