Ethelbert White was a painter, illustrator and wood engraver celebrated for his modernist depictions of the English countryside. He studied at St John’s Wood School of Art and became part of the progressive London art scene, exhibiting with the London Group and associating with artists including Mark Gertler and C.R.W. Nevinson.
White travelled extensively through France, Spain, Italy and Belgium, absorbing the influence of European Post-Impressionism and its emphasis on simplified form, colour and structure. He brought these ideas back to the English landscape, developing a distinctive style in which fields, trees, water and figures are arranged with a strong decorative clarity.
