Paul Altman was born Paul Altmann in Düsseldorf in 1924. In 1933, following the rise of the Nazi regime, his family fled Germany and settled in Lyon, where Paul, his brother and his parents lived in hiding. Although his family name was spelt Altmann, with two ‘n’s, Paul chose to sign his paintings Altman.

He moved to Paris in the 1960s, where he continued to paint alongside a career in business. With his brother, he ran a company specialising in the steel industry, while painting whenever time allowed, particularly during holidays and in the periods he was able to spend in his Paris studios. His daughter recalls painting alongside him there, offering a glimpse of the importance of painting within the family as well as in his own life.

Altman eventually devoted himself to painting full-time at the age of 52, following the sale of the company he had run with his brother. He exhibited twice at the Galerie Maurice Denis in Paris, marking a new chapter in a career that had previously developed largely alongside his professional life.

Although his career as a full-time painter was brief, Altman produced a substantial body of work before his death in 1982, aged 58. His paintings encompass landscapes, Parisian scenes and nudes, reflecting his sustained interest in the everyday subjects of the world around him. His work is characterised by a direct and personal approach to painting, developed over many years while he balanced his artistic practice with a demanding business career.
