£3,200.00

Laurence Stephen Lowry (British, 1887 – 1976)

Martin between two Cats

(It is thought that ‘Martin’ might refer to Monty Bloom’s son)

Ballpoint pen on the back of a greetings card

Inscribed and signed with initials ‘Best of luck for your music exam on Wednedsay, LS Lowry’ (upper edge) further signed with monogram ‘LSL 1966’ (lower right)

5.3/8 x 4.1/4 in. (13.5 x 10.7 cm.)

Provenance: From the collection of Monty Bloom, a noted businessman and discerning collector whose close friendship with L.S. Lowry shaped one of the most significant private holdings of the artist’s work. Bloom’s collection reflected his refined yet eclectic taste, ranging from early Lowry sketches and signed prints to sculpture, Chinese works of art, and pieces by Sven Berlin. Many works were acquired directly from the artists themselves and remained with Bloom until his death in 1996, thence by descent through the family.
