Van Bree was a Belgian painter and scholar born in Antwerp in 1786. He studied in Paris as a scholar of Ann-Louis Girodot (himself a pupil of Davide) . In many works such as this there is a very strong link to neoclassical traditions many of which seem to stem from his time in Rome where he had a studio, this may well be from that period in the 1830’s. Some works from this period have made very large figures.
