WORKS ON PAPER EXHIBITION

25th March - 12th May

EDWARD RIDLEY (BRITISH, 1883-1946)

Most of the time Ottocento buy and offer works of art by well known artists. Very occasionally though, we will acquire something by a little known artist because it is just too good. Considering the collection of works we have on offer by Edward Ridley this is one of those cases. The attention to detail in his life drawing is flawless, as fine as any artist painting at the beginning of the 20th Century. His textile designs are equally exquisite and all have been recently restored and handsomely presented in bespoke hand finished frames.

SIR KYFFIN WILLIAMS

Sir Kyffin Williams is widely regarded as one of Wales' most important 20th century artists and was known for his striking landscapes, but this piece showcasing The Agony in the Garden demonstrates his versatility and ability to create powerful and emotive works beyond the Welsh countryside. This painting captures a moment of intense emotion, with the figure of Jesus in prayer as he prepares for his crucifixion. The composition is beautifully balanced, with a haunting use of light and shadow that draws the viewer in. It is a testament to Williams' skill as an artist and his ability to capture the essence of a moment. Don't miss this opportunity to add a rare and significant work to your collection.

Erté, Romain de Tirtoff

Erte is known as one of the most important figures in the genesis of the Art Deco movement and in the 1920's designed a collection of six pieces of furniture for an editorial spread for Harper's Bazaar magazine, of which only two prototypes were made. He also drew another half-dozen pieces before his death in 1990 which were produced and sold in New York for eye-watering sums in 1997. In 1985, he told Serge Leeman (his personal secretary and source of these original designs) that he regretted never having seen the furniture produced. We are selling the latter six original designs mentioned which have to be a very exciting prospect for any Art Deco collector. They are in mint condition .

(Léonard) Tsuguharu Foujita (Japanese, 1886-1968)

Tsuguharu Foujita is a Japanese-French artist known for his delicate, ethereal portraits and charming depictions of children and animals. His signature style combines traditional Japanese techniques with a Western influence, creating a unique and captivating aesthetic. From his early works in Paris to his later years in Japan, Foujita's art continues to inspire and delight audiences around the world.

Possibly alluding to Artemis, Jean Paul Bray’s 1953 works Cerf buvant a la source are rich and beautifully composed gouaches on paper. Parallels can be made with Picasso’s Pompeian Nudes and the works of Jean Souverbie. The hand finished frames perfectly compliment the lavish artworks. We have a further 3 oil paintings by the artist which can be viewed on our website.
