Michetti was forced to work as an artisan after his father died as a boy.  He studied at the Academia in Naples. Among his colleagues was Eduardo Dalbono, Filippo Palizzi, Giusepp De Nittis and Marco De Gregorio.  

Encouraged and supported by De Nittis he travelled to Paris and exhibited at the Salon in 1872 to 1876.  In the 1881 exhibition in Milan he exhibited 34 paintings mostly studies of faces, full of sentiment, like the current example.
