Eliot Hodgkin (British, 1905 - 1987)

Eliot Hodgkin was the cousin of Howard Hodgkin, the abstract painter, he was educated at Harrow and the Royal Academy under Francis Ernest Jackson. By the middle of the 30’s Hodgkin was established as a still life painter but also executed landscapes and murals regularly exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He is perhaps best know for his still lives working in egg tempera. During the war he worked for the Ministry of Information and painted drawings of plants growing in London’s bombsites resulting in a commission as part of the war artist’s scheme.

In 1959 he turned down the opportunity of becoming an Academician but continued to exhibit at the RA (a total of 113 paintings between 1934 and 1981). He exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, Agnews, Wildenstein and in New York’s Durlacher Brothers, amongst others.

He died after suffering a crippling disease in 1987 and is buried at St. Johns, Notting Hill.

‘In so far as I have any conscious purpose, it is to show the beauty of natural objects which are normally thought uninteresting or even unattractive.’…. ‘I try to look at quite simple things as though I was seeing them for the first time and as though no one had never painted them before’. This particular example, painted in 1950, details the corner of a garden focusing on palms which are picked out beautifully in an array of green tones. There is a real sense of heat in the composition and light which could be almost anywhere in the Italian region. It is a large example in comparison to his very small tempera works.
