Delphin Enjolras (French, 1857-1945)

'A Shepherd at dusk', circa 1900

Oil on canvas

23.1/2 x 33.1/2in. (including frame)

Condition: Surface dirt and varnish discolouration.  Slight stretcher bar marks, cracquelure, paint surface slightly thin to upper edge, good impasto especially to lower half.  In a painted wood frame with some chips and losses.

The vast majority of Enjolras' works are dedicated to studies of ladies in the their boudoirs, this is a very unusual  departure being a landscape.  However, there are passages where his brushstrokes are very familiar for example  the light captured  on the sheep's backs.  It would therefore be an important addition to any Enjolras collection.
