Dupuy? (French, circa 1900)

Bon viveurs watching the can-can

Oil on board

Indistinctly signed `Dupuy(?)’ (lower right)

24 x 30 in. (61 x 76.3 cm.)

Inc frame 37 x 30.1/2 in. (94 x 77 cm.)

Condition: Oil on board, good impasto, surface dirt and varnish discolouration, slight frame abrasions, in a gilt composite frame. It would probably benefit from a reframe.

When we took possession of this work it was covered in a very thick layer of dirt and varnish. It cleaned up very well and has revealed a fascinating snap shot of life in Paris around the turn of the 20th Century. It is frustrating but we are still working on identifying the artist from the signature. The location is likely to be the Folies-Bergere. One can well imagine the sitters rubbing shoulders with the likes of Manet, Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec
