Of the five children Gauguin had legitimately, it is known his two favourites were Aline and Clovis. Tragically Clovis died young in 1900 after blood poisoning after a hip operation. This study shows Clovis as a baby, it is a very touching and intimate study of Gauguin's favourite son. His son died only 3 years before his own death which must have been a devastating blow. This most personal of works comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Wildenstein institute.
